  • Rock Machine Blizzard 90-27: Downhill Anywhere!
    The Blizzard 90-27 is one of the most exciting bikes in Rock Machine lineup. Thanks to its 170-160 mm suspension travel and aggressive geometry it can descend anywhere with confidence, and isn’t humiliated when the trail changes into a climb. It’s no blunder this bike is called a “blizzard”: Rock Machine likely to have given this name since it tackles challenging slopes with such tempo, that the snowfall would simply be blown away by the bike’s scud. I guess the name “avalanche” would have been just as perfect! As you may remember, last year we reviewed another Rock Machine Blizzard to our greatest satisfaction, it was also a top-of-the-range 90, but a 27+ tire size version with less suspension travel. The present Blizzard sibling has longer travel with conventional 27.5 wheels, and so we were eager to find out not only how it compares not only to the competition, but also to the “little brother” we have ridden last year. Blizzard 90-27 showcases all Rock Machine’s trademark technical features, such as the Floating Pivot Suspension (FPS) system, which — with the addition of Smart Link — responds to impacts coming from the ground with exceptional sensitivity, while still managing to avoid blocking the rear suspension under hard braking. The Sharkspine EVO top tube design is also a trademark of Rock Machine bikes, and the Blizzard makes use of this advanced frame construction. The tube shape resembling the shark’s back provides lower standover for the frame to aid changing position over the bike, consequently it allows a rider of shorter statue to choose a larger frame size with a longer cockpit. According to current trends, the Blizzard 90-27 features concealed cable routing and a tapered head tube along with a BOOST 148 × 12 mm thru axle at the back for a stronger rear wheel interface. The 160 mm travel and FPS system provide excellent downhill performance for this bike, and the suspension range puts the Blizzard right in the middle of the enduro bike category. Rock Machine also defines the bike for this type of riding, so the intended application is a clear cut. The heart of the system is top class rear shock, the Rock Shox Super Deluxe RC3 DebonAir, providing a multitude of adjustment possibilities, hence allowing the Blizzard to be set up perfectly for the given terrain and condition. The 3-stage compression dampening adjustment is ideal if you not only want to roll on descends, but also pedal. In the so-called “pedal” and “lockout” modes, the rear suspension moves much less under pedaling, wasting much less energy from rider input. The lower attachment point of the shock is also unique: instead of the conventional pivot mounting, it is bolted first to a “Y” shaped piece, which in turn is fixed in two points to the rear swing arm. The so-called Smart Link transmits forces from the rocker with maximum utilization of the suspension travel without the undesirable „shutting off” in the last third of its travel. The 2019 Blizzard model will come with the Super Deluxe Coil RCT, featuring a steel spring instead of air, thereby further enhancing sensitivity, and cutting down on overheating issues on extreme long slopes under heavier riders. A Rock Shox Lyrik RC with a 170 mm travel performs the suspension duties in front, which is the perfect choice for Enduro riding. It’s plenty strong, stiff, has adjustment for rebound and low-speed compression dampening, in a word it’s everything one could ask from a fork designed for this application. Shifting duties are handled entirely by the SRAM GX set, it’s a 1×12 system with a 32T BOOST crankset and a 10-50T rear cassette. This gearing is more or less adequate for most riding conditions, the low range is perfect for the bike allowing it to tackle any uphill gradient, but since it can be ridden so fast on the descents, you may sometimes run out of gear flying downhill. Mind you, this only happens at insane speeds! It is also possible to modify the gearing by replacing the front chain ring with something bigger, something I would recommend if the riding involves more downhills. I consider the brake choice for the Blizzard 90-27 to be a bit from left field, since TRP hydraulic disc brakes on production bikes is a rare sight these days. Moreover the TRP Slate G-Spec HD-M820 is specifically designed for extreme MTB use, demonstrated by its 4 piston construction and the 200 mm front, 180 mm rear discs. I also have to mention that they look darn good! Concerning the wheel set, WTB STP i29 rims are laced to Bitex hubs, resulting in a sturdy construction, making it an ideal choice from Rock Machine designers. The tires are also from the WTB range, the Vigilante offers an aggressive tread pattern and full tubeless compatibility. With the exception of the saddle, all accessories – seat post, handlebar and stem – come from the Race Face Aeffect series. The stem is a mere 35 mm long, handlebar rise is also 35 mm, along with a 35 mm clamp diameter. The dropper seat post breaks with this magic number, since it can be lowered by no less than 125 mm from the handlebar. After all this technical information, it’s time to look at what is the Blizzard 90-27 like on the trails. The design and appearance is always a subjective, but no one I spoke to has yet to say that this bike is ugly. The appearance is certainly unique, I personally love the striking color scheme, which demonstrates the bikes awesome power.   • Northwave 2019: Niche Footwear, New XC and Road Shoes
    We found a lot of significant novelties at the Northwave booth of this year’s Eurobike. In a nutshell 2019 will see the introduction of shoes for platform pedals for those who prefer not to use a clipless system, most road and XC shoes will all be completely revamped and the renowned Italian brand will expand its vast clothing range towards casual style MTB clothing. There are many branches of cycling where clipless pedal systems are rarely or never employed. For example, BMX riders and extreme mountain bikers prefer large platform pedals, moreover, practicality and simplicity overrides are other factors in leisure cycling and commuting. And there are those, who just do not like the idea of the fixed pedal-shoe connection. For this not so insignificant number of riders, choosing an advanced cycling specific shoe is not that easy, since manufacturers concentrate their product ranges on the clipless market. Due to the size of the market, this is especially relevant in Hungary, so a suitable footwear offering stability, efficiency and safety on a flat or platform pedal is far and few between. In 2019, Northwave enters this segment of the footwear market, introducing not one, but two new models called the Clan and the Tribe. For both of these new niche shoe models, Northwave has paid particular attention to durability, as they are often used for extreme cycling activities, involving large impacts on shoes. In addition, the Italian designers put a great effort into the creation of a sole with adequate grip and rigidity to aid stability and efficiency. Between the two models, the Clan is the more advanced, which is reflected in both the upper and sole. The latter consists of three layers: starting with a lightweight, vibration-absorbing EVA foam, then a rigid middle TPU layer is added with special elastic zones aiding adaptation to personal anatomy. Finally the Clan’s sole features a particularly adherent outer layer. This was developed in conjunction with the French rubber specialist, Michelin. Aptly named Gecko+, it is said to be the most durable material on the market, nevertheless it’s tactile, offering excellent grip in both in dry and wet conditions. The design of the Gecko+ was inspired by the top-of-the-class Michelin Jet XCR tire. The upper part of the Clan is made of a specially developed, ventilated synthetic material, reinforced in some important areas to aid durability. The Clan will be available in 3 colors.   The Tribe model’s sole is somewhat more simple and a bit more flexible than the top-tier Clan, nevertheless it also received the Gecko+ sole developed in cooperation with the French rubber specialist. It also features the same tread pattern. Apparently the upper design is also different, there is less protective material, and there is some compromise in ventilation according to the Northwave literature. So the Tribe is better suited to street wear, general cycling and daily transportation, while the Clan is oriented to the more stringent requirements of extreme cycling disciplines. The Tribe is fashionable, an excellent alternative to both regular footwear and the sport-specific clipless shoes, and it’ll be available in 5 colors to best match any type of clothing In 2019, the new Extreme Pro will become the top-of-the-line road shoe model at Northwave. Both the shoe’s upper and sole are completely new development. The XFrame 2® represents the ultimate level in the upper, which guarantees a perfect pressure-free fit — just like its famed predecessor. In addition, Northwave returns to the dual SLW2 fastening system, which is good news for narrow-footed road cyclists, avoiding the difficulty of precise adjustment. (For wide or normal foot, both the previous and the new systems work equally well.) The design of this new flagship road model is unique, and both classic color and black and white version will be available. The sole is a story of it’s own. It employs the new hi-tech PowerShape Carbon technology, featuring a 100% carbon base with the highest rigid rating of 15.0 on Northwave’s stiffness index. Apart from the stiffness, it introduces a new arch support – similar to the Revolution model we tested previously – in order to provide maximum energy transfer while pedaling. The Extreme Pro is expected to satisfy the most exigent, performance-oriented road cyclists, it’s a long-awaited model with a classic design. In 2019, Northwave’s flagship XC shoe will be the Ghost Pro, sharing the same XFrame 2® upper construction with the Extreme Pro, along with necessary reinforcements in the vulnerable locations required for MTB riding. The sole technology has also been enhanced in comparison with the previous top-of-the-range model, the lightweight, full-carbon Hyperlight XC base receives a tread designed jointly developed with Michelin. These are actually rubber pads from a special compound, offering both high level of durability and traction, as expected from such a prestigious name in tire technology. The novelties at Northwave do not end with the above-mentioned top-of-the-range models. The Italian brand’s cycling footwear lineup will receive a facelift, and there are 5 completely new road and 5 XC MTB shoes in the Northwave 2019 lineup. Another major change is that the buckled closure system will completely disappear from the range, limiting the choice to velcro-fastening and the micrometric dial system offering the finest of adjustment. In addition, some popular Northwave models will see a change in name: e.g. the popular Scorpius will be found under the Origin designation in 2019. Northwave will also introduce a new segment in the clothing range. MTB all-mountain riders preferring the more casual, a loose-fitting style will be able to choose from several brand new jerseys, shorts and t-shirts, which are also available as complete collections. So if you are not a fan of the tight bike clothing used by the competitive riders, the venerable Italian brand provides fashionable baggy shorts and loose-fitting tops.   • Cube bikes helped Wanty-Groupe Gobert to become top pro-continental team
    For the third consecutive year, Wanty-Groupe Gobert has become the top ranked pro-continental road team, so next year they will likely to be invited to the Tour de France and the biggest races on the World Tour calendar. At the end of each season, the International Cycling Federation (UCI) announces the team rankings. Just as in 2016 and 2017, the 13 UCI race victories in 2018 put the Belgian Wanty-Groupe Gobert to the top place in the pro-continental division. Since pro-continental teams have the opportunity to start World Tour events, these three consecutive top placings give high hopes for the team to enter the most prestigious events on the pro calendar. For example, top pro-continental teams can get automatic invitation in the biggest stages races, such as Tour de France.   • Shimano 2019 Part 1 – Resurrection of XTR
    We have written extensively about the new Shimano products for 2019, however we were able to see and experience in person what the Japanese giant has in store at the Eurobike trade exhibition. In this two-part article, we would like to deal with the most important novelties in detail. The newly introduced 9100 XTR group set is not the direct result of the usual meticulous refinements which characterizes the brand, but a complete revamp of their top-tier MTB components, loaded with ingenious hi-tech innovations. The mountain bike segment of the industry seems to develop at a rather fast rate, hence the previous XTR 9000 series – introduced back in 2014 – is already showing signs of being outdated. Five years is quite a span in modern technology, the requirements and expectations have changed greatly in cycling, especially concerning MTB bikes. By contrast, the former 9000 Dura Ace or the 6800 Ultegra road group set introduced in the same time frame as the XTR 9000 is still competitive even on the highest level of racing. In absolute terms, the newly introduced road components bring important refinements, but the change can still be considered subtle. On the other hand, the MTB market has clearly shifted from a double to a single chainring drive system in the previous 5 year period, and Shimano’s main competitor has already debuted an affordable version of its 1×12 speed group set. Such a landslide change in technology forced the Japanese to come up with a blow rivalling Pearl Harbor to regain its market dominance. So a deadly weapon was developed in the form of the new XTR, it now reached the target, and virtually detonated the MTB component market. Shimano actually carried out a double prong attack: the XTR 9100 component line will be available both a single as a double chainring option, meeting virtually every need on the market. Let’s start with one of the gems in the new XTR, the crankset. The 24 mm diameter axle and the hollow forged aluminum manufacturing technology remains the same, but the left crank arm receives a completely new method of mounting. The solution is similar to that used in the decade old M970, where the left arm is fixed by a screw threaded inside the axle, while the bearing pre-tension can be adjusted by a ring attached to the arm. It is a complete novelty that the traditional arms holding the chainring have disappeared from the right side arm, sprockets of various sizes (30/32/34/36/38T) are fitted using a direct mount system and a central bolt attachment. The chainrings used for the single drive system have a new tooth profile, which prevents the chain from falling off. In case of a dual chainring setup, the large sprocket is mounted to the right crank arm as in the case of the single ring version, and the smaller sprocket is bolted onto it. For the time being, only a 38-28T combination will be available, due to the restriction of the front derailleur’s 10T capacity. It is a great advantage that the cranks are not specific to one or the other configuration, so they can be easily converted from one-by to two chainrings and vica-versa. The finish of the crankset is simply stunning, worthy of a top-of-the-line premium product. The previously undervalued rear cassette has now regained some of its charm due to the single front drive. It has now become one of the most important element of the shifting system, utilizing incredible technologies and machining. So much so, that the 12-speed XTR cassette is one of the main novelties of the 9100 set, moreover it is attached to the wheel hub by the way of a special cartridge body named Micro Spline. This was necessitated due to the fact that the HG type Shimano cassette body could not take a sprocket any smaller than 11T. The newly developed Micro Spline system permits the mounting of a 10 tooth smallest sprocket, thereby greatly increasing the gear range of the 1×12 drive system. The three largest sprockets of the 10-51 cassette are made from super strong aluminum alloy, the middle ones are titanium alloy mounted on heavily machined aluminum spider arms, while the smallest sprockets are tool quality steel elements placed one by one on the cassette shaft. The weight of the 10-51T cassette is 359 grams, exactly the same as the top model from Shimano’s main competitor. For those who are bothered by the large jumps between the gear steps, Shimano offers a 10-45T cassette option, which can be used with either 2×12 or 1x12s drive systems. Even more surprisingly, the new XTR 9100 offers an 11 speed cassette option as well, which utilizes the above-mentioned technologies, and can be retrofitted to previous group sets from the Japanese giant (e.g. XTR 9000). This option clearly targets the demanding weight-weenie crowd and racers who still have older components. It is important to note that the sprockets are not only machined to help the chain onto the larger neighbor (e.g. lower gears), but also in the other direction. This cuts gear change lag to a third. The chain is made with hollow pins and uses a patented joining method called QUICK-LINK. There will be no less than 3 different rear derailleurs available, the one-by system has a mid and a long cage option, the former works only with the 10-45T cassette, the latter is 28 mm closer to the ground, but it can handle the gigantic 10-51T cluster variant. Model RD-M9120 designates the sole two chainring compatible rear derailleur, and it can only by paired with the 10-45T cassette option on the rear wheel. All derailleurs are Shadow RD+ designs with an increase in spring resistance in order to keep the chains stable on even most challenging terrain. The new 13-spoke pulley wheel is also a novelty, allowing more precise changes with less resistance.
