  • Cube bikes helped Wanty-Groupe Gobert to become top pro-continental team
    For the third consecutive year, Wanty-Groupe Gobert has become the top ranked pro-continental road team, so next year they will likely to be invited to the Tour de France and the biggest races on the World Tour calendar. At the end of each season, the International Cycling Federation (UCI) announces the team rankings. Just as in 2016 and 2017, the 13 UCI race victories in 2018 put the Belgian Wanty-Groupe Gobert to the top place in the pro-continental division. Since pro-continental teams have the opportunity to start World Tour events, these three consecutive top placings give high hopes for the team to enter the most prestigious events on the pro calendar. For example, top pro-continental teams can get automatic invitation in the biggest stages races, such as Tour de France. Our regular readers may already know that Wanty-Groupe Gobert is proud to ride Cube bikes. We have reported on this collaboration when we visited the Cube headquarters in Germany. In mass start road competitions, the Belgian team uses custom-painted Cube Litening C:68 bikes with Shimano Dura Ace equipment, and in time trial events the riders get on board their futuristic-looking Aeriums. It’s important to note the Aerium model shown in the 2018 Cube product catalog is not “UCI-compatible”, it’s a triathlon-specific model, but Wanty-Groupe Gobert gets a special version for racing at UCI-organized events.   • Shimano 2019 Part 1 – Resurrection of XTR
    We have written extensively about the new Shimano products for 2019, however we were able to see and experience in person what the Japanese giant has in store at the Eurobike trade exhibition. In this two-part article, we would like to deal with the most important novelties in detail. The newly introduced 9100 XTR group set is not the direct result of the usual meticulous refinements which characterizes the brand, but a complete revamp of their top-tier MTB components, loaded with ingenious hi-tech innovations. The mountain bike segment of the industry seems to develop at a rather fast rate, hence the previous XTR 9000 series – introduced back in 2014 – is already showing signs of being outdated. Five years is quite a span in modern technology, the requirements and expectations have changed greatly in cycling, especially concerning MTB bikes. By contrast, the former 9000 Dura Ace or the 6800 Ultegra road group set introduced in the same time frame as the XTR 9000 is still competitive even on the highest level of racing. In absolute terms, the newly introduced road components bring important refinements, but the change can still be considered subtle. On the other hand, the MTB market has clearly shifted from a double to a single chainring drive system in the previous 5 year period, and Shimano’s main competitor has already debuted an affordable version of its 1×12 speed group set. Such a landslide change in technology forced the Japanese to come up with a blow rivalling Pearl Harbor to regain its market dominance. So a deadly weapon was developed in the form of the new XTR, it now reached the target, and virtually detonated the MTB component market. Shimano actually carried out a double prong attack: the XTR 9100 component line will be available both a single as a double chainring option, meeting virtually every need on the market. Let’s start with one of the gems in the new XTR, the crankset. The 24 mm diameter axle and the hollow forged aluminum manufacturing technology remains the same, but the left crank arm receives a completely new method of mounting. The solution is similar to that used in the decade old M970, where the left arm is fixed by a screw threaded inside the axle, while the bearing pre-tension can be adjusted by a ring attached to the arm. It is a complete novelty that the traditional arms holding the chainring have disappeared from the right side arm, sprockets of various sizes (30/32/34/36/38T) are fitted using a direct mount system and a central bolt attachment. The chainrings used for the single drive system have a new tooth profile, which prevents the chain from falling off. In case of a dual chainring setup, the large sprocket is mounted to the right crank arm as in the case of the single ring version, and the smaller sprocket is bolted onto it. For the time being, only a 38-28T combination will be available, due to the restriction of the front derailleur’s 10T capacity. It is a great advantage that the cranks are not specific to one or the other configuration, so they can be easily converted from one-by to two chainrings and vica-versa. The finish of the crankset is simply stunning, worthy of a top-of-the-line premium product. The previously undervalued rear cassette has now regained some of its charm due to the single front drive. It has now become one of the most important element of the shifting system, utilizing incredible technologies and machining. So much so, that the 12-speed XTR cassette is one of the main novelties of the 9100 set, moreover it is attached to the wheel hub by the way of a special cartridge body named Micro Spline. This was necessitated due to the fact that the HG type Shimano cassette body could not take a sprocket any smaller than 11T. The newly developed Micro Spline system permits the mounting of a 10 tooth smallest sprocket, thereby greatly increasing the gear range of the 1×12 drive system. The three largest sprockets of the 10-51 cassette are made from super strong aluminum alloy, the middle ones are titanium alloy mounted on heavily machined aluminum spider arms, while the smallest sprockets are tool quality steel elements placed one by one on the cassette shaft. The weight of the 10-51T cassette is 359 grams, exactly the same as the top model from Shimano’s main competitor. For those who are bothered by the large jumps between the gear steps, Shimano offers a 10-45T cassette option, which can be used with either 2×12 or 1x12s drive systems. Even more surprisingly, the new XTR 9100 offers an 11 speed cassette option as well, which utilizes the above-mentioned technologies, and can be retrofitted to previous group sets from the Japanese giant (e.g. XTR 9000). This option clearly targets the demanding weight-weenie crowd and racers who still have older components. It is important to note that the sprockets are not only machined to help the chain onto the larger neighbor (e.g. lower gears), but also in the other direction. This cuts gear change lag to a third. The chain is made with hollow pins and uses a patented joining method called QUICK-LINK. There will be no less than 3 different rear derailleurs available, the one-by system has a mid and a long cage option, the former works only with the 10-45T cassette, the latter is 28 mm closer to the ground, but it can handle the gigantic 10-51T cluster variant. Model RD-M9120 designates the sole two chainring compatible rear derailleur, and it can only by paired with the 10-45T cassette option on the rear wheel. All derailleurs are Shadow RD+ designs with an increase in spring resistance in order to keep the chains stable on even most challenging terrain. The new 13-spoke pulley wheel is also a novelty, allowing more precise changes with less resistance.   • Giant Trance 29 “2” Review – When Less is More
    Following a 4-year break, Giant will reintroduce a new 29-er trail bike in 2019. The new Trance 29 features the category’s smartest suspension system paired with a progressive frame geometry. [Link to published news item: ] With the new Trance 29, Giant re-enters the 29-er trail MTB market segment, and we can be sure that the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer has carefully planned this development. They designed a unique trail machine filled with novel engineering solutions. What makes the Trance 29 so special? First of all, the 115 mm suspension travel at the back seems quite modest in the context of the “more is better” view so prevalent in these days. The Giant says that the characteristics of the Maestro suspension system – they have been developing for over a decade now – requires less suspension travel to perform the same performance compared to other systems on the market. It is worth noting that the Maestro is a special multi-linkage system, effectively utilizing the spring travel throughout the complete range, with a light and sensitive start at the stroke and no significant impact on either pedaling or braking. The system has performed very well in the past, but Giant has made major refinements, providing the Trunnion mount and the Advanced Forged Composite upper rocker arm for increased stiffness and strength, which renders the system even more independent from pedaling or braking forces. If one was not be able to spot the most recent trends in MTB geometry just by looking at the bike, the frame geometry chart clearly shows the marked difference from previous models. The chain stay is quite short, while the top tube is long, the head tube is shallow (66.5 degrees), and the fork offset is at 44 mm, so this bike can be ridden steadily even on steep downhills without negatively effecting the climbing ability or drive efficiency. The model I tested is made from Giant’s well-proven ALUXX SL aluminum tubing, but it’s also available in carbon for the “Advanced” series. The top tube features a pronounced curved shape, leaving plenty of space for movement over the frame. This also allows a secure long weld “seam” at the down tube junction, resulting in a rigid and strong front triangle. In keeping with today’s trends, the cables are all concealed inside the frame, the steering column is oversized (OverDrive system), along with the compulsory press fit bottom bracket and the BOOST standard wheels – all these factors make the Trance 29 a modern and technologically advanced trail bike. Despite being a “mere” basic model, the Trance 29 “2” features Fox suspension elements both front and back. The fork is a Fox 34 Float Rythm with a 130 mm travel, and comes with a handlebar mounted locking mechanism and a 15 × 110 mm wheel mount. This excellent fork is backed up by the Fox Float DPS Performance rear shock which also offers supreme performance, along with rebound and the compression dampening adjustments. Setting the latter to its extreme position – by way of turning the blue lever – the rear suspension is virtually locked out. Shifting and drivetrain duties are handled by the brand new SRAM 1 × 12 NX Eagle group set, with the sole exception of the cranks, which is a Truvativ model. Actually this does not mean a deviation from the SRAM brand, since the Truvativ models are also designed and made by the American component manufacturer, the main difference being the less elaborate and evidently cheaper chainring compared to the standard SRAM offering. With the new NX Eagle set the 1×12 transmission enters a lower price segment, which also helps to keep the price more reasonable for this Trance 29. The afore-mentioned crank set comes with a 30T chainring which is paired with a 11-50T cassette on the rear wheel. This gear range can withstand serious uphill efforts, as you will read below. The bottom bracket is an interesting design: first you would think that it is some kind of threaded system, but a more careful inspection will reveal that we are dealing with the Press Fit adapter component of the brand new SRAM GXP Dub system. Just as the crank set, the brake is also a modest model in the SRAM range. The Guide T is meant to represent a compromise regarding price and performance, and comes with both 180 mm front and rear discs. We all know that Giant not only produces excellent bike frames but also high quality components, so our test bike comes with the Giant Tracker Performance wheel set. Boost standard hubs can be found both front and back, laced to XCT 29 rims, which the manufacturer calls “tubeless ready compatible”. In contrast to most bikes on the market, these are not only tubeless compatible, but ARE tubeless, since everything is provided for tubeless tire installation straight from the box. The bike is shipped with the aggressive Maxxis Minion 29 × 2.3 tires – the personal favorite of the editor of this website – and since it’s a tubeless setup, we can use them without inner tubes from day one! Furthermore, all the other components on the bike (handlebar, stem, saddle, seat post) also boast the “Giant” inscription. So in essence the drive, shifting and braking components are from one manufacturer, and the rest from the Taiwanese brand. This is clearly not a disadvantage in case of the Giant Trance 29 “2”: the 40 mm stem and the 780 mm wide handlebar setup is perfect match for the frame, likewise the well-performing dropper post is a must for such an aggressive modern trail bike.   • Az MKSZ is segíti a másfél méter kampányt
    A BKK és a BKV is csatlakozott a kerékpáros közlekedés biztonságát szolgáló kampányhoz. A Magyar Kerékpáros Szövetség éves szinten körülbelül 140 versenyén képviseli a másfél méter kampány üzenetét. Princzinger Péter, a szövetség elnöke a sajtótájékoztatón elmondta: “A kerékpársport előtt álló legnagyobb kihívás, hogy miként tudjuk bővíteni az utánpótlás bázist. Ebből a szempontból kulcsfontosságú, hogy a szülők biztonságban tudhassák az edzésre igyekvő, edzésen részt vevő, vagy versenyen szereplő gyermeküket. Ezért örülünk hogy részesei lehetünk ennek az összefogásnak. Az MKSZ éves szinten a versenynaptárában szereplő versenyeken képviseli a másfél méter üzenetét, valamint a hamarosan induló webshopunkban is kapható lesz a másfél méter póló, azaz bárki csatlakozhat a kampányhoz, ami immár mozgalom!” Az MTI közleménye a sajtótájékoztatóról: A Budapesti Közlekedési Központ (BKK) és a Budapesti Közlekedési Vállalat (BKV) csatlakozott a kerékpáros közlekedés biztonságát szolgáló “1,5 m-es előzési oldaltávolság” kampányhoz jelentette be az aktív Magyarországért felelős kormánybiztos csütörtökön sajtótájékoztatón Budapesten. Révész Máriusz közölte: a biztonságos előzési oldaltávolság megtartását népszerűsítő matricával ellátott buszok fognak közlekedni a fővárosban, illetve megállókban is kihelyeznek erre figyelmeztető táblákat. Hozzátette: az Országgyűlés elé kerülő KRESZ módosítási csomagban szerepel a 1,5 m-es előzési oldaltávolság előírása is, a jelenlegi megfelelő oldaltávolság meghatározás helyett. A kormánybiztos hangsúlyozta, hogy a költségvetésből komoly források szolgálják a kerékpáros infrastruktúra fejlesztését. Szerinte ugyanakkor a kerékpáros közlekedés további népszerűsítéséhez közlekedési szemlélet megváltoztatására is szükség van. Ugyanis sokan attól való félelműkben nem ülnek biciklire, hogy az autók túl közel haladnak el a kerékpárosok mellett. Ennek megváltoztatása érdekében indították a kampányt – mondta Révész Máriusz. Dabóczi Kálmán, a BKK vezérigazgatója közölte, hogy a kampány keretében 20 megállóban helyeznek ki figyelemfelhívó táblákat, illetve 13 autóbuszt matricáznak fel. Bolla Tibor, a BKV elnök-vezérigazgatója arról szólt, hogy a buszvezetőik figyelmét felhívják a kerékpárosok védelmére, ám a biciklisektől is azt kérik, hogy tartsák be a szabályokat. Halász Áron a Magyar Kerékpárosklub szóvivője emlékeztetett arra, hogy a magyar lakosság 70 százaléka szokott rendszeresen. vagy alkalmanként kerékpárral közlekedni, vagyis tömegeket érint a kampány.
